Andy Ihnatko, writing for Macworld UK (hat tip to Daring Fireball):
No, I no longer wish I had an 11-inch Air. What I have here — a third-generation iPad and an Apple Wireless Keyboard — is better. I have better-than-good native iOS apps to handle almost all of my mobile needs. When only a desktop app will do, I have VNC, and/or the wonderful OnLive Desktop service that allows me to run Microsoft Office on a virtualised Windows 7 server
I’ve been feeling this since the launch of the first iPad.
Well, almost. With the development of Atari offering 99 classic console and arcade titles for iOS for a song, there’s little reason left to jailbreak your iPad just to fiddle around with Mame. Unfortunately, my favorite Atari arcade title of all time is not on the list, but one of my fave Atari 800 games is, so I’ll take it!
Nicely prescient article I posted at RomanLadder.com, back in July. Sometimes even I get it right.
There was a giant argument raging on Macbreak Weekly on the future of the Mac OS. Alex Lindsay thinks Apple, within 5 – 10 years, will license or open source the OS, pretty much abandoning the desktop in favor of its mobile iOS platform. Andy Ihnatko vehemently disagrees, thinking there’s lots of life left in the desktop; he is merely curious about what Mac OS XI is going to look like. I think they’re both kind of wrong.
